  • Learn fundamental graphics concepts, including transformation matrices, quaternions, and more
  • Get set up for iPhone development with the Xcode environment
  • Become familiar with versions 1.1 and 2.0 of the OpenGL ES API, and learn to use vertex buffer objects, lighting, texturing, and shaders
  • Use the iPhone's touch screen, compass, and accelerometer to build interactivity into graphics applications
  • Build iPhone graphics applications such as a 3D wireframe viewer, a simple augmented reality application, a spring system simulation, and more

iMovie '08 & iDVD: The Missing Manual

iMovie '08 & iDVD: The Missing Manual Review

I just received the book "iMovie '08 & iDVD" that I ordered here on Amazon from CollegeBooksDirect who sells here on Amazon. I went with their cheaper price and they were on Amazon where I like to buy most of my online purchases of books, merchandise, products, etc. I know how to edit videos and burn DVDs under windows - I record TV, edit out commercials, and burn to DVD or make DivX videos, or I do home videos and edit those - but now I have to learn how to do all that on a Mac. I have a Macbook running Tiger and it has iMovie '08. I know that Leopard and iMovie '09 (with iLife '09) are currently available right now at the time that I am writing this, but I don't plan on upgrading until Snow Leopard is out and probably iMovie '10 may be coming out by then. So, I have iMovie '08 here and I have to learn it. The first thing that puzzled me was how to do transitions and how to do titles or running text on the screen. How do you do that in iMovie. Agh! So I stopped peeking at what iMovie does on my Macbook. I was putting off learning iMovie since I still had the comfort of my windows pc-tv video system to edit with. But I wanted to learn iMovie. So I got this book. Now about transitions and titles. There's a whole chapter on transitions in this book. Yea! And there's also another whole chapter on titles etc. in this book. Double Yea! So I'm done. Well, not quite, but that's all I needed to know for now. I know, I know. There's more to learn. But I didn't turn to a book to learn how to edit video with Nerovision on my windows machines. But with a Mac, maybe it's because it's a different world, I needed a book. There's online tutorial stuff out on the net to search for, but having a book particularly these "missing manual" books by David Pogue are a great crutch to lean on and learn from when going over to the Mac side of the computer world. I also have the "Mac OS X Tiger: Missing Manual" book which I found useful in that other book's chapter(s) for learning more about the unixy side of the Mac. These books are cool to flip through for if you want more in-depth how-to information because you really don't get any printed manuals with the Macbook. Thanks for reading!

Whether you consider yourself a pro or a hobbyist, you have to admit that Apple's iMovie 08 and iDVD 08 are amazing right out of the box. Unfortunately, the box doesn't include much of a user's guide, so learning about these applications is another matter. iMovie 08 & iDVD: The Missing Manual gets you up to speed on all of the themes, motion graphics, titles, effects -- everything that lets you turn raw digital footage into highly creative video projects.

You get crystal-clear and jargon-free explanations of all the iMovie 08 and iDVD 08 features, including the new video library, how to view transitions, titles, and sound in real time as you add them, and ways to publish your creations directly to YouTube. Renowned author David Pogue -- tech columnist for the New York Times -- uses an objective lens to scrutinize every step of process, including how to:

  • Work on multiple iMovie projects at once and drag & drop clips among them
  • Output your creation to a blog, its own web page, or as a video podcast with iWeb
  • Use "Magic iMovie" to import your video and make a movie for you
  • Integrate with other iLife programs to use songs, photos, and an original sound track
  • And a whole lot more
From choosing and using a digital camcorder to burning the finished work onto DVDs, posting it online, or creating versions for iPod and iPhone, iMovie 08 & iDVD: The Missing Manual zooms right in on the details in a concise and understandable manner. The book also provides a firm grounding in basic film technique so that the quality of your video won't rely entirely on magic.

iPhone SDK Programming, A Beginner's Guide

iPhone SDK Programming, A Beginner's Guide Review

I would like to say that this book is great. It's definitely a great book for beginners.
The book teaches how to do the basic stuff such as navigation controllers, table views and simple stuff such as buttons, images, view controllers, etc.
However, I noticed this book seemed to be rushed...for example, the author teaches how to make the navigation bar disappear
using the viewWillAppear method but then doesn't tell you how to get it back and where to place code (PAGE 178).
I found out that you must incorporate setNavigatioBarHidden:NO animated:YES to view didLoad method in the second view controller just to get the Navigation Bar back.
It was frustrating to search through the net and then figure it out on your own.

I recommend this book for absolute beginners, who would like to tinker but not for production.
Although the author has written a decent book, I hope that the author realizes that improvements are needed such as:

1) Completing methods when they are introduced.
2) Help the reader understand why they are doing some things introduced.
3) Check the book for logical reasoning in the reader's perspective, such as the aformentioned navigationbar.
4) If a publishing company rushes the author to print an unfinished book, then the author needs to find a new publisher.

Fun Intro to iPhone Programming. - David House - San Francisco, CA
Easy to understand introduction to iPhone programming. Along with coding, Interface Builder is utilized in the examples and exercises to give the reader a better sense of how it can be used in development. Overall I've learned a lot from this book.

No Easy Access to Table of Contents in Kindle for iPhone Version - Web Phillips -
I am giving the Kindle for iPhone version of this book a low review, because it lacks an easy access to the Table of Contents.

You cannot easily navigate to the Table of Contents of this book using the "Go to" feature in the Kindle for iPhone app, because it states that no Table of Contents is available for this book.

However, a Table of Contents for the Kindle for iPhone version of this book does exist, but you have to manually flip through the pages on your iPhone or iPod Touch to find it.

Not useful at all for a mac newbie - Dotlit - San Diego, Ca
Since I have no experience with macs, itunes etc, I had hoped this book would help me find my way around my new iphone 3G. Unfortunately, this was not the case, and anything that I have accomplished (taking pictures, sending text messages, emails, using the GPS etc) I accomplished on my own, having found NO useful tips I am no further forward as far as "syncing", ipods etc.
I cannot recommend this book at all. It was a waste of money.

Learn C on the Mac (Learn Series)

Learn C on the Mac (Learn Series) Review

When it comes to technical books, Apress makes some of my favorite and most useful books. Being in IT, and being a proud Mac owner and Snow Leopard user for about a year now, I figured I should start learning more about developing for Mac's, so I purchased Learn C on the Mac. When purchasing this book, we must keep in mind that just learning C will not allow us to create the coolest looking applications and software for OS X. C is what C++, the more popular Java, and what Objective-C are based on. The goal of this book is teach us the basic fundamentals that prepare us for C++, Objective-C or Java, and to allow us to feel comfortable with Xcode (Xcode is where we code, it's like Visual Studio or Eclipse for the Mac).

For the beginner, this book is perfect, as the author clearly states that to his surprise, he's found children and soccer moms are interested in learning how to code - so it should be really easy to follow. For those that already know VB and C#, the book will be even easier to follow along, and you'll learn the basics of developing for the Mac or iPhone. Overall, this book is an intro to programing (regardless of which language or platform you plan to use) and a guide to using Xcode for programing.

Anything exercises the book has us do, are all ran and debugged in Xcode. Once you finish this book, you'll be able to understand Learn Objective-C on the Mac, also by Apress. Objective-C, based on C (this book), is what Mac's actually run on, and allows for scrolling, menu's, etc... The last step, after understanding Objective C, is to decide what you want to do. Do you want to develop for the Mac or the iPhone? If you choose Mac, Learn Cocoa on the Mac by Apress would be the right book, if you choose to learn mobile Cocoa instead, for the iPhone, you would want Beginning iPhone Development: Exploring the iPhone SDK by Apress too. Cocoa would be what we really need to learn to be able and create iPhone applications and software as we know it today.

Anyways, I don't think it'll matter if your a beginner, or already a developer (non C or Java), you will likely learn from this book. Sure, Java developers might be able to review too, and learn how to use Xcode, but if your already developing in C, Java you might be ready to move on to Objective-C. Have fun learning, and remember, this is not a PC only world anymore!!

Good book to get started - James Love Lll - Mamaroneck, NY United States
So far this book has been great at introducing some of the concepts necessary for programming in C. I have had some programming experience in he past, so it is not all foreign to me. The programming examples are easy to follow and the book is well organized. This is my first use of a book from Apress, and I will likely purchase follow up books like programming in objective-c.

Great book for learning C whether on a Mac or not. - Lazy Gator - Central IL - USA
Learning to program in C can be very boring and intimidating (it was to me in my younger days). Most of the time you're writing code to run in a command environment with no fancy and colorful-looking graphical user interface (GUI) to play with - typically just black and white text. However learning this language is very important for gaining a strong programming foundation. Especially if you're going to develop using a more modern language that expands upon C (Objective-C on the Mac, Visual C# in the Microsoft environment, C++, etc.).

Learn C on the Mac is a relatively simple read. The author does not assume that you're already a C programmer and therefore takes you step-by-step from the beginning through important topics that apply to many different languages. The book flows very smoothly from one topic to another gradually taking the reader into more complex coding. Not once did I get lost on a topic.

This book does not teach you everything you need to know about programming and it does have you write plain old command environment-type programs, but all of the language features, techniques and real-life scenarios it contains is very valuable to the learning process. You will feel like a C programmer when you get finished with this book.

I purchased the Kindle edition and it was formatted very well for my 9" DX screen.

Happy programming!

Professional iPhone and iPod touch Programming: Building Applications for Mobile Safari (Wrox Professional Guides) Review

I've never owned a Mac (until now) and never done any development for that platform. While this book doesn't intend to cover the recently released iPhone SDK (it was published before the SDK's release), it does provide excellent coverage of web-based development for the iPhone (and iPod Touch). It leverages a free, open-source library to take much of the grunt work out of it, but also provides detailed code samples and examples and enough information so you could probably do it without the library should you desire. If you're interested in making your site look and feel like an iPhone app, this book will get you there. You should understand HTML, CSS and, preferably, a modicum of Javascript to get the most out of the book.

The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone SDK

The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone SDK Review

Every other iphone book out there sticks to teaching the use of Interface Builder everytime you work on the GUI side of you app. That's totally insane.

I bought this book, made it 4 chapters in and thought I wasted my money. I bought another book and a couple months in realized that all I learned was interface builder and how to make the most basic apps possible. I've gone back to this book and realized it was the only one I needed.

Do not waste your time with making interface builder apps unless you are not a programmer or you are just looking to make a simple app over the weekend and probably never publish it.

This book separates the real programmers from the people who pickup an IDE and think they can code because they can drag and drop GUI components.

I would rather not have any books than not have this book. I would recommend buying it with the Learning Objective c book (from the same publisher) if you are new to the language. I find that it is not as simple to pickup as C++, Java or C# because the syntax is sort of odd. The learning objective c book will help with that.

If you are a good programmer, are new to iphone development, are capable of making really good software and want to create complex apps, this is the only book you will need.

If you are not a programmer (either literally or just think you are a programmer but really are not), are new to iphone and have never written software (on your own without using Google to find all your source code), go get one of the other books that teach drag and drop interface building, you will be lost with this book.

Customer Review

Definitely NOT helpful for new iPhone developers. - software developer -
This book is very frustrating, and an immense disappointment. Despite my 40 years of software development on other platforms, this book is woefully inadequate at helping someone new to iPhone development. Unclear documentation, poorly laid out source code (Ms. Sadun admits that it's done this way for ease of book publishing, not for the user of the book). Downloading the code itself is an exercise in frustration, requiring that you set up other tools (without any documentation) just to be able to download. If you bother to compile the examples, every one has the same name, so you are left with a mess to separate and cleanup, both on your mac and on the iPhone. The author gives you a website if you have any questions, but totally fails to answer a single question or provide any help whatsoever.

Perhaps if you are already a very experienced iPhone developer you can gain some useful kernels of wisdom from this book, but otherwise it's useless. Stay away!
